There is a fundamental irony in having trained as a classical painter in the later part of the 20th Century. I have grown up with television, mass media and Hollywood. I am well aware of the image producing capabilities of the computer and the video recorder. It has also been said that photography co-opted the traditional function of realist painters in the 19th Century, which was to make faithful renditions of reality.
As a contemporary realist painter, I think that a painting should confront us with our notions of reality. My paintings are completely imaginary. I am not painting situations that actually exist; they are meant to be metaphorical, transcendent of themselves, transformative and fictional. I use no photographs, no models, no copy machines to create the work. This is where I believe there is a departure between painting, which is based on technique and art, which is transcendent. The struggle is for me to combine the two.
